| days after the tournament Amir and Hassan arent realy friends. At first Hassan avoids coming into any sort contact with Amir. Eventualy Hassan tries to be friends Again but Amir pushes Hassan away. Baba starts to lighten up and him and Amir are doing very well they have no problems at the moment. Until one day Amir just cant stand Hassan, Amir asked his dad if he ever considered replacing the old servants and getting new ones. Baba told Amir if he ever said anything like that evrer again that he would Beat Amir. From there Baba and Amirs relationship went down hill. Amir dislikes Hassan so much he tried to start a pomegrant fight with him to see what would his reactions be. Like the loyal person Hassan is instead of retalieating, Hassan hit himself with a pomegrant. When Amir turned thir-teen Baba through a big party for him. everyone was invited even Assefs family. Assef teased Amir by giving him a autobiography on Hitler. |
| on the day of the kite tournament Hassan and Amir are partners, Amir flies the kite And Hassan goes and grabs them after they fall(the kite runner). so as there in the tournament Amir does really good flying the kite. in fact he did so good that he was the last kite standing, and when your the last kite standing that means you are the winner of the tournament. when the kite finnaly falls Hassan goes after the kite so he can bring it back. As Hassan brings back the kite he runs in to some trouble. he runs into Assef and two of his friends chaseing Hassan into an allie, and as thier in the alley Amir was looking for Hassan and the kite,he see's Hassan but he just hieds behind a wall he doesnt say a word or try to help Hassan. Assef rapes Hassan while the others hold him down. Amir then runs awayleaving the scene.after Hassan gets raped Amir finds him and amir plays like he didnt see anything. Amir gets the Kite and he gives it to Baba, Baba is extremely happy Amir and he embraces him with love. |
| poor Amir and poor hassan! both of them struggle deeply in there own ways. Amir struggles to find a true friend, someone who is not a servant just a friend. Because Amir becomes really irritated by hassan because he is to loyal to Amir. he gets really jealous of hassan because he thinks his dad likes him more. for example when he over heard one of there conversation. Baba and RaRahim Khan were talking about how Amir is not becoming a man, he cant stick up for himself he always has to get Hassan to srick up for hime. Hassan is the exact opposite of Amir. because hassan is very kind luving and generous. in most kids eyes i would say that hassan is the perfect friend. Hassan trys hard to regain there friendship but amir is very unhappy with amir. |
New York Times:China’s Economy Growing at a Breakneck Pace
| To day Chinas economy went up 11.9 percent rewriting the record books to the fastest growing country in over a decade. When asked how they grew so fast china replies by saying that they did massive trades, new factories, roads, bridges, and real estate. I think that it’s very coincidental that the leading supplying country in the war in Darfur is china, and all of a sudden the leading supplier is now the leading country growing economically. Not only are they a leading supplier for the war in Darfur but also the war on global warming and pollution. I think that they are the leading country economically for the wrong reason. i think its safe to say that there leading economicaly because alot of there money and oil come straight from sudan. And in return the money that they give is exchanged for weapons that they send and those weapons are used to kill innocent tribal people. so think twice befor you call china a "leader". |
new york times:Sudan: Underground Lake Could Ease Darfur Crisis
| Water in Sudan! To day researches at Boston University found an extra source of water in western Sudan. It appears to be a lake about the size of Massachusetts or the popular lake Erie. This new water source can be a big help on the crisis in Darfur. At night girls go fetch water from pales far out of their native Darfur village. Boys don’t fetch water because they are high at risk of being murdered, while the girls go out because they wont be killed they’ll be raped! And that’s a dreadful decision that the mothers of these children have to face. A Geologist team has made a plan to add 1,000 Wales to be dug for farmers, and herders to cease the problem of competition over scarce resources, which in this case its water. |

New York Times:Life Shrinks for a Former Liberian Leader Now on Trial
| Life indeed shrinks for former liberian leader Charles G. Taylor. While he faces charges of war crimes and crimes against hummanity, Charles G. Taylor's flashy life has been taken away. From nice white suites, estravagent homes, to nice cars. Its a big change to Mr. Taylor now cooks his own food, does his dishes, reads newspapers and receives prison issued pocket money. He is allowed to spend two hours in the yard and to work out in a gym. It might sound like alot but its two steps back from his flashy life, living like this is not only devastating to Mr. Taylor but also isolating. With the crimes and horrible acts he camited its safe to say he deserves it! |

Later on that day a suicide bomber set off a bomb that was strapped to his vest, this attack alone killed 12 police offers, and 16 candidates that wanted to puresue the job of a police officer. with these attacks in mind it honest to say that there is signs of breakdowns of the peace agreements, that were made last september between the government and leaders in the North Waziristan tribal region.Militants are now distributing a document that breaks the truce, complaining that government forces had attacked a suspected militant hide-out area. |

The Power Of One
New York Times:Cultural Flashpoints North of the Scalp
White powdered wigs have been worn for about three centuries now. But on January 1, 2008 things will change. Britain’s most senior judge, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, announced on Thursday that, starting Jan. 1, the wigs would no longer be worn in most trial courts; neither would gowns. This is a very controversial topic in the Britain world, in court all of there lives they have known one thing and one thing only, that you were powdered wigs and you have to were a gown. And for this to just suddenly change it’s devastating to most people. The wig has been around since the 1600, and back then they symbolized a representation on the British legal system. But lord Phillips was just simply annoyed, by the smelly and hot wigs. and he didnt think about himself but he also thought about the government and how they spend 3,000 dollars a piece!

The article i read to day was mainly about how the Quds force is supplying Iraq with bombs and weapons. And how the U.S is trying to cooperate with the Iraqi government so to restore security and trust. At a time Karbala attack was carried out iraqi men dressed as american soldiers with forged I.D cards. the Quds have done a numerous of attacks including the recent one. in iraq the list of problems go on for days. But it the little things and people that make it a worse place. especially coming from a horible background such as, there ex president SUdan Hussien. if the people of iraq up lift themselves by doing right and helping out other people, iraq would make a huge turn around and become a better place. Not only for themselves but the world in general, because if iraq would live better and do right I dont think that our U.S troops would be there rite now.

Not On Our Watch final blog
camp darfur
My job was to work in the exit tent; it had its ups and downs. in the begging I absolutely hated that job. Not only was it cold but the students kept trying to still rubber bands and it was extremely windy. But the second day i adjusted. I taught many people many new things, I sold rubber, I got people to sign letters that are being sent to George W. Bush, and I taught many unaware people about divestment.
If I could change anything about this project i would like to have worked in my tent that I helped build and decorate. i worked so hard on that tent with my fellow partners I thought foreshore I was going to speak about the Bosnia genocide. Instead I was devastated that i could not work in my own tent.
All together that was the greatest high tech high event that I participated in yet!

Not On Our Watch
4-6 This chapter to me was a little bit like the first three chapters. The chapters talked a lot about his personal experiences and what he saw. But for the most part these chapters were good, like in the begging of the book were the narrator talks about were the root of the problems in Darfur come from. He gives us a good understanding of who is fighting who and why. He explains who the Janjaweed are in chapter four and in chapter five he talks about how the citizens are fighting against the government, and he goes into detail about how the U.S is helping and what you can do to stop the genocide. Chapter five was the strongest chapter out of all the chapters I read so far basically it puts into context the same things we talk about in class, such as china and Russia and how their aiding the Sudanese government, and the African Union and how there doing all they can. Chapter six was okay I felt the it went off topic in many places how they once again talked about different movies, and how out of no were they were discussing aids in Africa. Well the book is getting better the more I read I think chapters 4-6 were great. |

Not On Our Watch
Chapters 1-3 Chapter two to me was very similar to chapter one they get really personal about their experiences. From the jump of chapter two they get straight to their experiences, and that’s what I love about this book. How it doesn’t beat around the book with you it jumps straight in into action. And the book also tells you how they feel. For example in chapter one John and Don both say that it is out responsibility to help out in Darfur. Just after reading the first three chapters I can really say that this book is very unique. And so far so good! |

Thursday Event reflection
| This Thursday event was one to remember. We started the night off by stuffing the pamphlets. Then we all were let in first, because we were given a copy of Don and josh’s brand new books that didn’t even make it to the stores yet. After about an hour of waiting the show eventually started. It was a life-changing event for me and hopefully my class too. We began the night by watching a documentary made by high school students. Not to brag or sound like we are way better, I think they should have left the documentary making up to High Tech High. Then that's when josh and don came up on stage and they began to speak about Darfur and what’s happening there. We as a class had a great understanding of what was happening in Darfur. Don and josh I think really cleared it up about what’s happening there. After they were done talking these kids from some local high school asked really obvious question that we all already new about. My opinion is that they should of let High Tech High ask the questions, because I think that we were more stronger mentally about the issues that are going on today about Darfur instead of the local high school. After about three questions from the local high school students they opened up the floor to the audience. One question from an audience member was that “what can we do to help save Darfur”? And then Don and Josh went on for about 15 minutes about ways that you could possibly help save Darfur. As one of my classmates Lucien was getting ready to ask a Question he was rudely interrupted by some odd man with a mullet, who was saying random things about Dick Chaney. The security guards eventually escorted him out. After Lucien asked his question the event was over. That night was a night to remember I personally had fun and I learned lots of things. Thank you Cortney and Ms. Alderson! |

dialectic journaling
“The student of Talmud, the children that I was, had been consumed into the flames.”(pg 34)
This is a short but simple quote from Eli. As he throws all of his clothes except for his belt and shoes into the fire he knows that he has a new life. He is now forgetting and loosing his childhood in Talmud. His pride and dignity and everything that made him happy has now burst into raging flames, and he reminisces on his childhood that is now gone. It also sounds like when he says “The child he was had been consumed into the flames” is also an indicator that he is being mature about the situation, and he is acting the age that he told the SS officer, 18.

Reflection
All Quiet on the Western FrontEnrich Maria Remarque
All quiet on the western front was a great book with a slow start. In the begging I could not stand this book. Although, as they went from harmless and innocent schoolboys to killing soldiers the book was now more interesting. It was great how Remarque gave us specific details about the war. And how he built relationships with Paul and his real close friends from high school. Remarque is a great author but a few things that he could have done better was in the begging he should have grabbed our attention as the reader, instead of starting in a slow and boring place like the cafeteria it should have been on the battle field. Also as I was reading Connors blog I agree with him when he said the book had a lot of characters but they were poorly developed. As the book went on I really enjoyed it and its graphic war scenes. Would I recommend this book? Of course I would, but I would tell the person the beginning is an extremely slow beginning.

the first bomb!
“The first bomb, the first explosion, burst in our hearts. We are cut off from activity, from striving, from progress. We believe in such things no longer. We believe in the war.”
1. This quote symbolizes that war is now a reality; this is the shaping of the “human animals”. This is the part that they are now realizing age is not important. Their young lives as school boys and friends are now over and it’s only a memory. Now they’re reminiscing on the good times they shared in school with friends and girls. And just like that it all vanished now the only thing they no is war kill or get killed.
2. Their lives are now are based and focused on the war. Is this rite? Of course not, these young men have a lot more to live for then a war. They were on the rite path they went to school and they had a future. Their idiotic teacher persuaded them into making the biggest mistake of their lives. Not only does the war isolate you from the real society, and take away your friends and love ones it also takes away many of their rights. This interest me because its awful how there government knows that this is a problem and their killing off a generation, but they still insist on fighting this war.
"Human Animals"
All Quiet On the Western Front 1-4
"At the sound of the first droning of the shells we rush back, in one part of our being, a thousand years. By the animal instinct that is awakened in us we are led and protected. It is not conscious; it is far quicker, much more sure, less fallible, than consciousness. . . . It is this other, this second sight in us, that has thrown us to the ground and saved us, without our knowing how. . . . We march up, moody or good-tempered soldiers—we reach the zone where the front begins and become on the instant human animals."
Why would Paul characterize himself and his comrades as "human animals"?
Your task: Discuss the meaning of this quotation and the experiences the boys are enduring internally. In addition to your posting, comment on one other student's post.
This is a very strong quote that has obvious meaning to me. When Paul says, "At the sound of the first droning of the shells we rush back, in one part of our being, a thousand years. By the animal instinct that is awakened in us we are led and protected. “At the sound of the first droning of the shells we rush back, in one part of our being, a thousand years. By the animal instinct that is awakened in us we are led and protected. This segment from Paul’s quote is already giving the meaning away. It’s stating that when Paul and his comrades entered into the war and saw all of the blood being shed, they thought kill or be killed. Basically they lost the mentality of humans gained the mentality of animals. And that’s were the saying of “human animals” comes into play, by them being humans with the mindset of animals. When looking at this situation you would think how could they kill other human beings with no hesitation or no remorse? As soon as they entered the war they were trained like animals and they killed like animals. There once innocents is now lost in the replace of the brutal, violent, and disturbing animals that they have now become. They been dehumanized so bad that now there acting the same way towards there friends. Their dear friend Franz Kemmerich is a victim of their horrific behavior. While he is laying on his deathbed Paul and his friends can only think about taking his yellow leather boots, so they stick around and wait for him to die and they take his boots. They were once friends but now Franz was just a young man with a nice pair of boots that the “human animals” used him for.

our class is the total opposite
In our class I think its way different. In our last seminar the topic was the Christmas truce and how it affected World War one, then in a blink of an eye we were discussing the war in Iraq. Then we talked about how bush is an illiterate person. I think its great but sometimes like Lucien I get really annoyed. Its basically the total opposite of what the period 2 goes through. They talk about the past and we don’t, we talk about the present. Even during all quiet on the western front we still managed some how to talk about Bush. Maybe we should have seminars together to balance it out.
Wednesday, February 21, 2007
Make sure you allocate time in advance to prepare for this!!!Our seminar will be focused around the central question:Read the packet on WWI, review your journal entries from All Quiet on the Western Front, review your notes, and specifically read the Christmas Truce articles and answer the seminar prep-questions. You will be partnered up with your playwrite partner (inner and outer group mode
The Christmas truce was a sign that people can get along under the fiercest and most brutal conditions. Not only did the country’s share cigarettes, play cards, and play football, the most manliest soldiers song Christmas carols with each other. As the Germans started off the truce they gave the British some chocolate cake, with a note saying proposing to give the British a concert and for them to cease fire. Then surprised British accepted the offer, they returned the offer by giving the Germans tobacco. All of a sudden the Germans started singing Christmas songs and British joined in and from there the Christmas truce went all through different trenches.

Legacy of the French Revolution
Besides the fact that napoleon and his people killed 40,000 people in twelve months. Napoleon just wanted to better his country; he did so by conquering many European countries except for
